THEMUSEUM is located downtown Kitchener and stages experiences that connect people and cultural content. The Brush Off is an annual event, that supports local artists through a live painting competition that involves attendees through voting for their favourite artist each round. There were 5 rounds, each half an hour, and some consisted of themes for the artist. Talented, creative individuals painted in front of us for each round – it was amazing to see the passion and talent these individuals possess After all 5 rounds, a winner was announced and all the original pieces were auctioned off.
This was an awesome, entertaining and eye-opening experience for my friends and I who attended. We had never been to such an event where local culture was spotlighted amongst a creative atmosphere and mixture of people – everyone from locals, students, children and some out-of-towners. I personally stumbled upon a new-found love for original art and those that create it. It was interesting to see how much we all got into the live painting and voting experience. After the first round, we each were cheering on our ‘favourite’ artist (though each and every artist was individually exceptional) and voting for them as they created wonderful works of art. DJ Furious George was also a hit – he played song after good song, killing it at the DJ booth overlooking the room of attendees and artists mingling amongst some cocktails. In addition, Mushroom Catering had amazing food to top the night off.
This event is a wonderful collaboration of community, artists and culture. It is a great way to showcase local artists and get their name out in the community.
