The BOX 13 art show and sale is a unique annual regional visual arts event for artists designed by artists, with a goal to increase the level of excellence of the art produced and appreciated in this region. BOX is not for profit and depends on the generosity of sponsors and donors.
Each November, BOX art show and sale takes up temporary residence in a carefully selected locale. In recent years, we have hung our hats and cultured wares in some of Waterloo Region’s most charmed, albeit echoing belly of abandoned factories and buildings rich in history designated for re-purposing. BOX satiates these voids with illimitable creative juices, boundless energies and infinite artistic visions. It brings them to life.
This year, BOX fearlessly forged ahead with its torch of ingenuity and has set up camp in the cavernous viscera of 41 Ardelt Place Kitchener. This year the BOX venue will be particularly exciting! Doyle Properties has generously offered to host BOX 13 in this 1950’s former steel plant, and at 15,000 square feet it is almost three times larger than any place we have inhabited before. Professional lighting is a huge part of the budget, and is integral in making the venue boldly dramatic, with the art coming to life. An old flatbed rail car will be the stage at the reception for 500 invited guests on November 15.
BOX 13 will display the juried work of 33 regional artists selected in September by three independent visual art professionals using the WalterFedy offices in Kitchener. Each selected artist will show approximately eight different pieces – that’s almost 300 original works of art on display for sale at BOX 13. Last year’s BOX 12 had 71 eligible artist applicants and displayed the work of 24 so we’re growing again!
The show and artists are proud and privileged to give back to the community that supports them. The Independent Living Centre of Waterloo Region is this year’s BOX 13 charity partner. A per cent of all art sales from the event will be donated by the participating artists to the charity instead of paying commission or an artist fee.
Last year 1650 attendees enjoyed the artwork of 24 juried regional visual artists at BOX12 in Galt and this year at BOX 13 our (their) goal is to double that number! The BOX 12 artists sold almost $25,000 original art in less than 8 hours and donated almost $5000 to the BOX 12 charity partner. As the charity changes each year, BOX makes new friends, helping us to grow, stay fresh and vibrant.
All of the BOX artists will be in attendance, ready to chat, answer questions, and explain inspirations and techniques of their work. This allows for one to have a better understanding of a specific piece and its connection to the artist. BOX has free admission and parking, and is accessible.
