Are you all about the overabundance of Halloween swarming at people from on your front lawn, or are you more the subtle pumpkin on the stoop kind of scare? We went out and found some houses decorated from full-flare to subtle humour and want to show them off for some Festive fun before Halloween rolls around on Thursday. If you still have to get your decorations done, better shake off the cobwebs and pump up the fright factor.

Who needs a sign pointing kids to the door when you can have fun inflatables to guide the way?
Who needs a sign pointing kids to the door when you can have fun inflatables to guide the way?

Let’s start with the over-the-top flare, meant to tell kids that this family loves to go all out. Sure it seems like a lot is happening, maybe too much, but we know that it’s all kinds of crazy fun. You know for sure they have a tub full of candies for all the kiddies to enjoy, and not in the frightening-the-child kind of trick way, but in the fluffy-happy-child kind of treat way.

Subtlety can sometimes be more frightening...

If you aren’t the type to go over-the-top, try something sleek and simple. A couple skeletons here, maybe a carved pumpkin there, or some cobwebs (whether real or fake) clinging to the corners of your windows and door frame.

Don't be afraid to be crafty...
Don’t be afraid to be crafty…

If you aren’t one to go out and purchase your decorations and aren’t afraid to put in a little bit of work, you are probably the crafty Halloween decorator. A few well placed toilet papers rolls here, some handmade scarecrows there, you will be sure to delight and thrill all the kids coming for candy.

Strategic frights
Strategic frights…

How about just a couple very strategic elements on your home. Just a few little pieces here and there to scare or surprise those visiting. Maybe they won’t see it until it’s too late, maybe it will jump out at them on a dark stormy night, or maybe it will just make them smile as they walk by.

The old favourite, the haunted cemetery. Complete with ghost and a prisoner in a cage.

Of course we all love the frightening and horrible, especially this time of year. What neighbourhood would be complete without the ever faithful cemetery scene. Tombstones and ghosts and goblins, oh my. And yes, the Grim Reaper has coming knocking…

Pumpkin sick from too much pumpkin ale, I’ve been hit right in the funny…

Finally, we have those few people who love to make us all laugh. Whether it be using live humans in roles to make us jump or just setting up a pumpkin in a compromising situation. Here’s to them, for always knowing how to tickle our funny bones, without having to cut it out.

Send us your Halloween decoration photos, urban@thecord.ca, and we will post our favourites after Halloween.

A real child of the nineties, Tegan’s interests are rooted in anime, lame kids movies/shows, and graphic novels. Looking through old photos also confirms her fashion sense included many a neon colour or floral print (read: still does). She aspires to have her own wall to wall, ceiling to floor library; where she can hunker down in a comfy chair by a fire, close off the world, and read a few good books.
