We’re hiring!

The CCE is almost a year old, so it seems appropriate that we do a little growing up. We are now hiring volunteer editors for several of our sections. While we can’t pay, we can offer a chance to get some great experience, have some say in the editorial direction of the CCE and get to go to a lot of great community events as a member of the press.

News editor

Our ideal candidate loves sniffing out stories. They get excited about going to city council meetings and digging through documents. They also know that news is about diverse communities, and they are willing to reach out to those people to find a new angle.

Duties include

    Directing the overall vision of the section each month
    Working with volunteer writers as well as the rest of the editorial team to develop stories
    Contributing one to two stories monthly
    Contributing to the blog as needed
    Participating in bi-monthly editorial meetings
    Working on the paper during production weekend
    Assisting with or directing feature stories as needed

Time commitment is 5-10 hours a week. You must also be available the weekend of CCE production to do work in the office. You should be comfortable working independently, and should have some experience writing and editing for an audience (even if it’s your blog). Knowledge of InDesign and CP style is an asset. You must be able to meet deadlines and take direction from the editorial team.

Urban editor

We’re looking for someone who gets excited by bike lanes, potholes and abandoned buildings. You love checking out new restaurants and you go to as many festivals as you can. The urban exploring editor needs to be able to communicate to our readers how to live well in K-W.

Duties include

    Directing the overall vision of the section each month
    Working with volunteer writers as well as the rest of the editorial team to develop stories
    Working with local non-profits to create the Community Conversation column monthly
    Contributing one to two stories monthly
    Contributing to the blog as needed
    Participating in bi-monthly editorial meetings
    Working on the paper during production weekend
    Assisting with or directing feature stories as needed

Time commitment is 5-10 hours a week. You must also be available the weekend of CCE production to do work in the office. Arts editor

Do you live for K-W’s music scene? Are you up on the latest art world happenings? Do you know how to spot the next big thing? If so, we want you to be our Arts section editor. We’re looking for someone with a strong sense of K-W’s arts and culture scene who also has a strong editorial voice and vision.

Duties include

    Directing the overall vision of the section each month
    Working with volunteer writers as well as the rest of the editorial team to develop stories
    Contributing one to two stories monthly
    Contributing to the blog as needed
    Participating in bi-monthly editorial meetings
    Working on the paper during production weekend
    Assisting with or directing feature stories as needed

Web editor + developer

We’re looking for someone who wants to do more than upload stories in WordPress. If you like to play with datasets, are interested in web apps and augmented reality, we want to talk to you. We’re in need of innovative web editor who will work with our editorial team to create great complimentary pieces for the web to go with our stories. You should also be comfortable bringing your own stories to the table.

Duties include

    Developing web features to accompany stories
    Working on special web projects like the 10 Ideas app
    Participating in bi-monthly editorial meetings
    Working on the paper during production weekend

Time commitment is 5-10 hours a week. You must also be available the weekend of CCE production to do work in the office. You should be comfortable working independently, and understand a variety of web application tools. Back-end development experience is definitely an asset. You must be able to meet deadlines and take direction from the editorial team.

Graphics editor

We’re looking for someone who likes to colour outside the lines. You should be innovative, and as comfortable designing something in Creative Suite as hand drawing it. We also want someone who thinks like a journalist. Your graphics will not only compliment the story, but tell one in conjunction with all the great words.

Duties include

    Working with the editorial team to come up with graphics for stories
    Assist in designing page layout
    Other graphics work as needed
    Participating in bi-monthly editorial meetings
    Working on the paper during production weekend

Time commitment for this position is 5-10 hours a week. You must also be available the weekend of CCE production to do work in the office. You should be comfortable working independently, and know how to use Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop backwards and forwards. You must be able to meet deadlines and take direction from the editorial team.

Social Media coordinator

The CCE Social media coordinator is responsible for the social media presence of the Cord Community Edition. Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and Web Editor, you will be responsible for the following duties

    Scheduling daily Tweets and Facebook posts
    Contributing two blog posts a week
    Updating and maintaining the CCE’s events calendar
    Assisting with long term social media strategy planning
    Contributing to the print edition of the CCE as needed

Time commitment for this position is 5-10 hours a week. You must be comfortable working independently. The successful applicant will have good knowledge of various online media and experience blogging.

Writers

We’re looking for writers who are willing to jump in and cover just about anything our region has to offer. Previous writing experience is not necessary, but you must have a distinct voice, an ability identify and follow stories and a passion for Waterloo Region.

Writers are expected to submit at least one story or oped a month. You must be able to work independently and meet deadlines.

Photographers

If you rarely leave home without your camera, this is a position for you. We’re looking for photographers who we can send on assignment to cover events, but who also have their own ideas for stories and shoots. You can expect to cover at least one event or do one shoot a month. You must be able to work independently and meet deadlines.
