This past Saturday, January 12th, I took a little trip to the Kitchener Market. Being a newbie to the whole experience, I was interested in learning more about what the market had to offer. I took a friend along who is also pledging to eat healthier in 2013.
How many of you are with me on that New Year’s resolution? So far, I’ve been pretty good at the whole ‘eating healthier’ thing, and I was excited to check out the Kitchener Market to find local, fresh food to add to my rejuvenated diet.
First of all, I was pleased to see that I could park for free and easily access the building, located just off King St downtown Kitchener – that was a plus! Once I walked in, I was amazed at how big it was. I was not expecting two levels and the variety of vendors that were there!
I talked to some of the vendors who were telling me that year-round, the market provides local, fresh food at a reasonable price. With this in mind, my friend and I quickly rounded up some fresh veggies, bread, cheese, and fruit for a mere $20 each. As I only cook for myself, this will do me for a week; for a family, I can see where coming to the market on a weekly basis is an affordable and fun option, as it was a great morning out of the house.
With winter in full swing, despite the lack of snow Kitchener-Waterloo has recently, some people forget about the local, fresh food options we have in the area. While at the market, I saw and purchased many ingredients that would be perfect for a easy and healthy ‘winter meal’. I’ve linked some recipes below that feature ingredients available this time of year. Enjoy!
