When one thinks of musicians who ooze harmonies, the groups or artists that often come to mind are Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, even the Beach Boys — not generally bands in our own backyard.

If harmony is something you’re looking for, then you should take a listen to the local band from Kitchener-Waterloo who go by the name Safe As Houses.

I streamed a new song of theirs on YouTube, “Alive.” It’s a mellow, melodic tune with heavy harmonies throughout the four and a half minutes. The song begins very soft, then slowly builds to where the vocals are matched with the sounds of strings, showing the band’s unique talent and sound. There’s even a break near the end where you can hear what sounds to be a trumpet or horn section.

The eclectic sounds of Safe As Houses are shared with indie folk/rock bands and artists of today like The Head and The Heart, The Decemberists, Manchester Orchestra and Bright Eyes, to name a few.

If you like what you hear, and want to support local talent, the band is having their upcoming album release party on May 11 at Starlight in Waterloo. Doors open at 7 p.m. Advanced tickets are $15.
