I saw Kitchener-Waterloo band EDDYEVVY live for the first time a few weeks ago and it was one of the most refreshing musical experiences I have had since I became aware of the local scene.
Equal parts melodic and dissonant, the band’s sound is something that resonates deeply in a live setting. Though I have been to more than one of their shows, it wasn’t until I found myself at an intimate house show on Euclid Street that I decided to give their catalogue the deep dive that it deserves.
Working chronologically, I started with 2017’s I’m Glad You Were Born EP where I instantly recognized the swelling guitar tones and dreamy vocals that hit me like a brick in that hot crowded basement.
Song’s like “Me and My Bed” shift at a brisk pace from light, dreamy guitar work into distorted, spacey/sludgy breakdowns.
Their first full-length project, a self-titled masterpiece, released in January 2019, shows the band doubling down on their signature sound, meshing spaced out vocals with dreamy guitar loops and anchoring that down with a steady, hard hitting drum track. The album is fleshed out even more with some slower acoustic tracks like “Can’t Go Back.”
My first description of the band’s sound went as follows: “All the things I like about shoegaze and none of the things I don’t.”
Upon listening to all of what they have to offer, I still feel that way, but I also feel that they are so far beyond any sort of description.
