Be in the know: 2013 so far…

The number thirteen is unlucky, right? Maybe I’m just a pessimist, but even the sound of it is kind of uneasy. So far, 2013 had a rather unpleasant start for K-W. Here are the city’s top stories of the year thus far…

Hostage on GRT bus

Last Saturday, January 5th a man in his thirties held a woman hostage on the bus on Keewatin Ave. for about two hours. He claimed to have weapons, but none were to be found after the fact. The man finally surrendered and thankfully nobody got hurt.

Naming the LRT

If you haven’t already heard, Waterloo Region is undertaking an $818-million dollar project – Light Rail Transit. Problem: they don’t have a name for it. I guess ‘LRT’ isn’t creative enough. The city is hoping the public is a little more creative than they are, requesting suggestions from Waterloo Region residents. Once the name is chosen, the construction will begin next summer. here‘s what K-W has thought of so far.

Missing Chef: Found

Jonathon Gushue is a respected chef who worked at Langdon Hall in Cambridge. New Year’s Eve he apparently checked out of a hotel in Toronto leaving no word with his wife or anybody for that matter. The search began heavily through social media outlets and more than a week later, he was located outside of Ontario. Apparently he’s gone missing before (without the trending topic on twitter).

The Strike: Illegal

Couldn’t have a snow day? I bet students would have loved a strike-day. The teacher’s strike was deemed illegal and teachers had to report work as usual Friday morning instead of participating in a walk-out. Whether the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation will still be doing their walk-out on Wednesday is still be determined as a decision could be made at any time.

Alright, it’s safe to say that 2013 has been off to a bizarre start but hang in there everybody. It’s just the beginning.
