This blog isn’t just a behind-the-scenes of the production of the Cord Community Edition. It’s also an adventure for a brand new resident of Kitchener – Waterloo: me.
My name is HG Watson and I am the Associate Editor of the Cord Community Edition. That basically means I’ll be in charge of the day-to-day editorial decisions of the magazine. It also means you’ll be seeing me out and about at lots of events in the community (I’ll be the one asking a ton of questions).
I come to The Cord from Windsor, Ont. where I was the Arts Editor for The Lance, University of Windsor’s campus and community weekly. Before that, I lived in Hamilton, Ont. for five years. Both Hamilton and Windsor are cities that are asking the question: what kind of city will we grow into? It’s a question that’s being asked at cities and towns across the country. As a whole, we’re becoming more concerned with how we build our urban centres. Just look at the resurgence of interest in Jane Jacobs, urban theorist, or the growing popularity of Spacingmagazine. It’s an issue that I have a lot of personal interest in having lived in cities my whole life.
As a journalist, I’m lucky that I have been given this wonderful platform to talk about building communities. I’m even luckier that I get to do it in a place where I get to discover the city as I tell its stories. I’m looking forward to exploring K-W region and getting to know all of the different issues and challenges that exist here.
Please feel free to get in touch with me, whether it’s with story ideas or questions, via email ortwitter.
See you around K-W
